What You Need To Know About Your Skincare When You’re Expecting
There are so many things to reconsider when you fall pregnant – what food you can eat, what activities you can do, and importantly, which beauty products you can safely use.
Some ingredients are considered to be unsafe to use during pregnancy, so it’s important to know what to check for on product labels, and how you can control your changing skin throughout your pregnancy.
When you find out that you are expecting a new little bundle of joy, make sure you check with your GP which skincare and beauty products they consider to be safe throughout your pregnancy. This information here might be helpful!
AVOID VITAMIN A & SALICYLIC ACID:
Research suggests that ingested forms of Vitamin A and Salicin could cause harm during pregnancy, although it is unclear whether the ingested forms of these ingredients pass into breast milk. Topical use (in your skincare products) has not yet been proven to cause harm during pregnancy or breastfeeding, but we recommend to stay on the side of caution and avoid using these ingredients during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
HOW DO I CHECK FOR VITAMIN A & SALICYLIC ACID ON INGREDIENT LISTS?
The most common names that Salicylic Acid might go by in ingredient lists are:
– BHA (beta hydroxy acid)
– Salicin
– Salicylates
– Willowbark
Vitamin A has several different forms, so check for the following ingredient names in your products:
– Retinal
– Retinoic Acid
– Retinaldehyde
– Retinyl Acetate
– Retinyl Palmitate
– Vitamin A
HOW CAN I SAFELY MANAGE MY HORMONAL SKIN DURING MY PREGNANCY?
Well, your options are a bit limited here. All the hormonal changes your body goes through during pregnancy can cause your skin to change quite drastically. Hormonal breakouts are common during pregnancy, as is chloasma – a form of pigmentation (also known as the ‘pregnancy mask’). Most products commonly used to treat these concerns will contain Vitamin A or BHA derivatives, so we suggest firstly consulting your GP, followed by a dermatologist, dermal clinician or skin specialist who can recommend safe skincare products and treatments for you.

HOW CAN I KEEP MY SKIN FROM GETTING DRY & FLAKY DURING MY PREGNANCY?
Don’t be surprised if you experience dry, flaky skin at some point during your pregnancy. Invest in a very hydrating, easily absorbed moisturiser which will provide all-day moisture to the skin, as well as protect the skin from the harsh elements.

WHAT SHOULD I USE TO PREVENT STRETCH MARKS?
Sometimes they’re unavoidable, and they’re a pain to try and get rid of once you’ve got them, so it’s best to be vigilant about keeping your changing body constantly moisturised to prevent stretch marks where possible. Don’t just apply moisturiser to your growing belly, cover your whole body – other areas will be changing and stretching as well.
